Worcester Valkyries learn Sevens fate

Worcester Valkyries will take on Richmond, Aylesford Bulls and Darlington Mowden Park Sharks in Pool One of the Women’s Premiership Sevens.

With support from the RFU, the eight Women’s Premiership clubs will be competing in their annual Sevens competition at Broadstreet Rugby Club before the two finalists join the men at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry on Sunday 7 August.

Fans with tickets to the Singha Premiership Rugby Sevens Series final will also be receiving a glimpse of the country’s best women’s players in a landmark move.

The women’s final will also be televised on BT Sport for the first time in a move that Vice-Chair for the Women’s Premiership Group, and Bristol Ladies CEO, Heidi Chapman-Mercer, expects to be a major boost for the game.

She said: “For women’s rugby in general, the fact that such a large national organisation like Premiership Rugby wants us to get involved is fantastic.

“It’s about the platform it provides. Women’s rugby is very successful. England Women won the World Cup in 2014 and Wales and Ireland had successful campaigns within the latest 6 Nations.

“For many of the players it will be a completely new experience. Some will have experience through internationals but most have never played with that many people watching. Though it’ll probably be a bit daunting, it’s a very exciting development.”

The two pools to play at Broadstreet Rugby Club have been drawn as:

Pool 1: Richmond, Aylesford Bulls, Worcester Valkyries, Darlington Mowden Park Sharks
Pool 2: Saracens, Lichfield, Wasps Ladies, Bristol Ladies Rugby
