REPORT | Wasps Ladies 19-66 Worcester Valkyries

Worcester Valkyries produced an emphatic ten-try, bonus-point victory over Wasps Ladies at Twyford Avenue on Saturday in the Women’s Premiership.

The Valkyries recorded a 66-19 triumph to make it three wins on the bounce, leaving Wasps without a win in six.

Heather Fisher starred in a dominant performance from Worcester, scoring four impeccable tries, while Rachel Lund and debutant Heather Cowell bagged a brace apiece alongside scores for Rochelle Clark and Bianca Blackburn.

The hosts did manage to put three tries on the board, with Sammy Wong, Rona Mitchell and Izzy Fisher crossing, but the Valkyries proved too hot to handle on a chilly day in London.

Valkyries were in top gear from the off and this showed when Lund received the ball out wide thanks to good work from Fisher and Ceri Large.

The versatile winger paced past the standing defence to score within the first 40 seconds of the tie.

Clark then crashed over just minutes later from a driving maul under the posts and Megan Goddard added the extras.

However, Wasps responded with Wong taking full advantage of a quick penalty to score.

But Fisher then added a spectacular eight-minute hat-trick to extend the lead, with Goddard converting all three tries.

Clark dominated at the ruck and managed to turn the ball over with Fisher receiving a timely pass and she ran from halfway to touch down under the posts for a second week running.

The 32-year-old then stormed past a timid Wasps defence from the Valkyries’ own 22 to score the try of the game.

And in spectacular fashion, Fisher added her third just moments later from a similar position to her second try from the Valkyries’ own 22 with an incredible run.

The Wasps defence were stunned but didn’t lie down and Mitchell managed to break through for their second of the day.

Courtney Gill was shown a yellow card for repetitive offences but this didn’t stop Worcester scoring another just before the half was out.

Blackburn notched her third score in three games and Goddard chipped over the extras as Valkyries went in at half-time with a mesmerising 40-12 lead.

Valkyries were quick out the blocks in the second-half with early territory in the Wasps half and Blackburn and Clark recycled the ball to the hands of Fisher and the England international darted home to score her fourth try of the match.

Cowell then came off the bench to score on the counter-attack, as the centre received the ball out wide after Lund made space, and she stepped her way past three defenders to score on debut. Large landed the conversion.

Wasps promptly replied after building pressure in the Valkyries 22 as Izzy Fisher capitalised, breaking away from several tackles to go over.

Soon after, Cowell capped a remarkable debut with a second try before Lund crossed for her second as she sprinted in from the 22, and Large converted both to cap an outstanding afternoon for Valkyries.

Worcester host the in-form Lichfield Ladies at Sixways on Saturday 29 October as they search for a fourth win in a row.
