Sixways legends get behind Acorns Charity Matchday

Three legendary stars from Sixways have thrown their weight behind the Acorns Charity Matchday – urging fans to get right behind the big New Year’s Day clash.

The seventh annual Charity Matchday will take place on January 1 as Warriors go head-to-head with Harlequins on home soil in the Aviva Premiership.

Nick Baxter, Craig Gillies and Steve Lloyd – all instantly recognisable faces from previous seasons at Sixways – will be among those at the match as they support the children’s charity.

The star trio were special guests at Acorns for the Three Counties last week and have now agreed to appear in the Charity Lounge at the game to help raise vital funds.

Lock giant Gillies, who made 288 appearances for Warriors over 11 seasons, said: “I still remember coming to Acorns as a player, meeting the children, enjoying arts and crafts sessions and was lucky enough to be an ambassador for several seasons.

“Being back at the hospice brings those memories flooding back and I’m delighted to be part of the Charity Matchday and to help raise some vital funds for Acorns while having some fun with some old teammates at the same time.”

Gillies will join ex-wing ace Baxter and former pack enforcer Lloyd in the charity lounge for the big game, with fans treated to a pre-match Q&A session, hot buffet lunch and the chance to win signed Warriors shirts and balls.

Baxter said: “Acorns is a wonderful charity and the game with Harlequins is a fantastic way for fans to help raise money to support everything Acorns do for children and families right across our region. It’s a great way to start the year by making a real difference.

Lloyd added: “It’s obviously a special time of year for families and visiting the hospice in Worcester and seeing all the work being done to make it a special Christmas for the children is a really humbling experience.

“Everyone in the city knows how important Acorns is so I’d appeal for fans to get right behind the day and join us in the lounge.”

Tickets for the Charity Lounge cost £30 for adults and £20 for Under-16s, which includes your match ticket and a hot buffet lunch, are available by visiting www.acorns.org.uk/warriors, emailing corporatefun@acorns.org.uk or calling 01564 825000.

In the past year, Acorns for the Three Counties has cared for over 210 children and more than 270 families, including those who are bereaved. It costs Acorns nearly £10 million every year to provide these services and it relies on the generosity of the public for the majority of this amount.
