Warriors AASE reach league play-offs

Warriors AASE side Worcester Sixth Form College set a Club-record of four wins from four with maximum league points after defeating Northampton Saints’ Moulton College 36-24 at Nunnery Wood Sports Complex on Wednesday.

The win means the youngsters have now qualified for the AASE League play-offs with two group games still remaining.

Worcester came out the blocks flying with three tries in the opening ten minutes to secure a 19-0 lead.

The first score came from the kick-off when a series of forward carries and good handling saw Lamaar Lawrence score under the posts.

Minutes later a solid Worcester scrum gave the backs a platform to run a perfectly-timed set-piece play with Paul Wells going through under the posts again.

Then again from the restart, Worcester showed their intent by moving the ball from one touchline to the other to give lock Lawrence space to sprint in from 50 metres. Jake Leonard converted two of the three conversions.

Moulton struck back with two tries of their own including one from an intercept and the other a well-worked try that broke down the Worcester defence and led to a score in the corner.

The fourth Worcester try was the pick of the bunch, starting with a loose kick forcing Worcester to play from their own line. Jake Leonard found some space and gave a brilliant offload to Charlie Gamble who raced away 80 metres before another offload saw Teddy Taylor score in the corner and Leonard converted from out wide to make it 26-12 at the break.

The second-half started off in similar fashion and a well-worked scrum led to Gamble breaking the line before neatly offloading to Oliver Gould to score in the corner.

The next score was instant from the kick-off and was another one for the highlights reel. After moving the ball across the pitch, Gould made 40 metres down the touchline and the forwards crashed through to create space out wide for Kai Lucas-Dumolo to touch down.

The last passages of play saw Moulton get two late scores but it was too little too late as Worcester secured a fourth straight win.

Warriors AASE Manager Ryan Watkins said: “The boys’ hard work in training is really paying off and our skill level and contact skills are improving all the time.

“I’ve given the boys a real licence to play from anywhere this year and they’re absolutely loving it. We scored three tries from kick-offs today and I don’t think I’ve ever been part of a team that’s done that before!”

Worcester are next in action at Bishop Burton College (Yorkshire Carnegie AASE) on Wednesday 11 October (kick-off 2pm).
