Warriors Community Foundation raises money for third Guide Dog

Warriors Community Foundation raised almost £5,000 from a Three Peaks Challenge earlier this year which will be used to fund their third guide dog.

A team of guides from the Foundation, Young Ambassadors  and six registered blind walkers took part in the challenge which helped to raise £4,700 for the Warriors Community Foundation and Guide Dogs.

The idea of the Three Peaks Challenge stemmed from a conversation between Simon Northcott, Warriors Disability and Inclusion Lead, and Tom Buckley, who plays in the innovative Hugby Visually Impaired rugby programme that has been devised at Sixways.

Buckley, who is completely blind, said that he had never walked up a mountain and Northcott followed up with the idea of providing guides for them to tackle the Three Peaks.

Fund-raising included quiz nights and on-line donations and the only disappointment came when severe gales prevented the team from ascending Scafell Pike in the Lake District, the highest mountain in England and what should have been the second leg of the .

But the intrepid walkers and guides completed ascents of Ben Nevis in Scotland and Snowdon in Wales, climbing a total of almost 2,500 metres in the process.

It costs £5,000 to sponsor a Guide Dog puppy until it goes into national training at around 18 months.

Warriors Community Foundation funding has previously supported two puppies, Biggsy and Jonny, who are now fully-fledged guide dogs.
