Davies excited for Tyrrells Premier 15s kick-off

Warriors Women Director of Rugby Roy Davies is looking forward to finally getting back into Tyrrells Premier 15s action this Saturday.

Davies’ side travel to Wasps FC Ladies on Saturday, having last played a competitive fixture at the end of March.

And though Wasps finished in the play-off spots last season, Warriors’ boss is hopeful his side can take points from the Twyford Avenue encounter.

“If we perform well, hopefully we can get the outcome we want,” he said.

“It’s tough with the quality of teams we’re playing and the amount of away trips we have in the first blocks of games.

“We know it’s going to be tough, we know we have to perform but we’re excited about it as well.

“It’s been a long time since we had some rugby, we haven’t played since the end of March so it’ll be good to see how it goes.”

Warriors have made addition both on the pitch and in the backroom team over the summer and boss Davies is pleased with how his team are shaping up.

“I think we are stronger, we’ve recruited well,” he said, “but we were happy with what we had, that’s really important to point out.

“We’ve got a group of players who we’ve developed over the last couple of seasons. They’re now two seasons into the process so I’m excited to see how they go.

“But we’ve recruited well, we’ve brought some good people in. I’m just looking forward to seeing how it all comes together.

“We’ve made some exciting additions on the coaching team. Likewise we had a strong coaching team last season who worked hard and developed people and we saw the results with the girls who went on to play under 20s rugby.

“We’ve brought Jo Yapp and Ash Kempson in who are really going to compliment that. We’re all about continuing to grow, develop and getting better.”

England Under-20s won the Tri-Nations Cup this summer under Yapp, with five of her players drawn from Warriors Women.

One of those was Akina Gondwe and the young prop is looking to bring her international experience back to her club form.

“The under-20s experience was really good, it’s always good to have opportunities to grow yourself as a player,” she said.

“I feel like being with the 20s has really developed me coming back into Worcester and bringing in the things I learnt this summer.

“Stuff like how to be an athlete, how to recover well, eat well. So that’s was really good and it was great to win the Tri-Nations Cup as well.

“Jo is an excellent coach, I’ve learnt so much from her, being with the 20s squad for two years. So to have her come in and add to the coaching team is amazing.”

Warriors Women’s visit to Wasps FC Ladies kicks-off at 3.00pm, with the development teams’ match getting underway at 2.30pm.
