Disappointment for Taufete’e in Japan

The United States and Warriors hooker Joe Taufete’e ended their Rugby World Cup campaign with a 31-19 defeat by Tonga in their final Pool A match in Hanazono.

The match was given the go-ahead on Sunday morning after Typhoon Hagibis had struck parts of Japan on Saturday claiming at least nine lives.

A minute’s silence for the victims was held before kick-off and Taufete’e, who started in all of USA’s matches, then helped the Eagles into a 12-7 lead by half-time.

But Tonga hit back strongly in the second half and finally ended USA’s hopes of recording their first Rugby World Cup win since 2011 when they scored a converted try from the final play of the match.

Taufete’e played 73 minutes before being substituted as USA finished their World Cup campaign without a point.
