Warriors Women duo win first Wales caps

Warriors Women duo Angharad de Smet and Caitlin Lewis won their first Wales senior caps against Spain on Sunday.

de Smet and Lewis started on the wings in the 29-5 defeat in Madrid, while fellow Warriors Gwen Crabb, Alex Callender and Sioned Harries all started in the forwards.

Eight uncapped players were named in the squad by Wales, who conceded five tries to a Spanish side which played with high tempo throughout.

Wales backs coach Gareth Wyatt though believes his side will benefit from the challenging encounter.

“The biggest positive from this game is that eight players have experienced international rugby for the first time,” he said.

“It’s a massive step up from club and regional rugby but they’ve had a taste of what is expected. Hopefully it will inspire them to move on and improve in the game which will only benefit us as a squad.

“We knew it was going to be hard, but the important thing is that we are exposing players to this level of rugby. Spain are an excellent side and we cannot criticise our players today.

“However, looking at the next few weeks, we know we have to get better. We made it clear that everyone would have a chance in the first few games and we are looking forward to Ireland next week.”
