Momentum the key for Warriors Women says wing Thompson

Warriors Women and England wing Lydia Thompson says the dressing room is a much better place after picking up five points from their last two outings in the Tyrrells Premier 15s.

The 27-year-old bagged a brace of tries as Warriors Women secured a bonus point at Loughborough Lightning on Saturday to set up a mouth-watering clash with Waterloo at Sixways Stadium this Saturday (kick-off 2.00pm).

“There have been a lot of positives to take from our last two games and it’s been nice to see how the players are growing in confidence and becoming much more resilient, which is huge for us,” said Thompson, who has been capped 45 times by the Red Roses.

“We’ve also benefited from the addition of Wales international Jasmine Joyce, who is an Olympian with a lot of Welsh caps.

“She brings valuable experience to the team and we’re certainly moving in the right direction.”

Reflecting on her two tries, Thompson paid tribute to the pack for setting the platform, adding: “It always feels good to get over the try-line, but I couldn’t have done it without the team as both of my tries came on the back of a lot of phases.

“The forwards gave us huge momentum going around the corner and then we moved the ball at pace in the backline, so actually it was a real team effort and it was nice to be on the end of those attacking moves.”

Warriors will be aiming to make it two home wins on the spin after claiming a memorable 15-12 victory over Bristol Bears in front of a record crowd at Sixways last week.

Itching to pull on the Warriors jersey again, Thompson admits momentum is key going into the festive period.

“We can’t change overnight, but we can build momentum and that can be huge for us as a team that is growing,” she said.

“Loughborough will be pushing for a top four finish this season and they’re a really good team with a lot of quality, so we can be proud of that second half performance when our backs were against the wall.

“The fact that we came out for the second half with a positive mindset and scored four tries to take away a bonus point is something that we can be really pleased with as it was a big test of our character.

“You just can’t buy that, and it was awesome to see the girls pulling their shirts on and showing real character against a strong Loughborough side.”

This weekend’s encounter against Waterloo has been headlined as Legends Day, celebrating the history and tradition of the Worcester women’s team with a number of former players in attendance.
