DOUBLE-HEADER EXCITES WARRIORS WOMEN CENTRE VARLEY

Warriors Women centre Meg Varley is relishing the return of Tyrrells Premier 15s rugby to Sixways when her side go toe-to-toe with Richmond Women in this Saturday’s double-header (kick-off 5.30pm).

Varley, who is currently in her third year studying for a degree in criminology at Coventry University, will take to the field with her teammates following the conclusion of the men’s European Rugby Challenge Cup clash with Russian side Enisei-STM.

“I’ve had a nice break and it’s been nice to chill for a couple of weeks, but we’re eager to play a match as everything has been building up this point over the festive period,” said the former England Under-20s player.

“Most of my Christmas was spent in the gym and working on conditioning and transitional stuff, which is important.”

Warriors Women ended 2019 in style, scoring 19 tries in December as they put Firwood Waterloo Women and Bristol Bears Women to the sword with vital wins to move five points clear of this weekend’s visitors.

“It felt so good to be on the front foot for a few games, and even when we were losing games, we were doing better than we have done in previous years.

“As a squad we can see how much we have grown and hopefully we can improve even more going forward.”

Varley, who came through the ranks at Old Coventrians and Worcester RFC, came off the bench against Harlequins in Warriors’ last league outing at Surrey Sports Park to round off 2019.

Despite tasting defeat, Varley and co showed they could mix it with the very best in the league with England wing Lydia Thompson scooping the Tyrrells Premier 15s Try of the Month for December.

“Everyone in the squad has come back in good shape and everyone is buzzing ahead of this Saturday,” said Varley, 20.

“It’s a double-header this Saturday, which makes the occasion even more special and we’re looking forward to getting ourselves out there and promoting ourselves more.

“We want to play well as a squad and really show what we can do.”
