Weir helps Scotland dash France’s Grand Slam hopes

Warriors’ fly-half Duncan Weir helped Scotland end France’s Grand Slam hopes with a 28-17 victory at Murrayfield in the penultimate round of this season’s Guinness Six Nations.

Weir came on as a 77th minute replacement and won his 28th international cap, three years after his 27th.

It was the first cap for Weir since he joined Warriors from Edinburgh in the summer of 2018 and he became the second member of Alan Solomons’ squad to be capped by Scotland this season following number eight Cornell du Preez who came off the bench in the tournament opener against Ireland in Dublin last month.

Weir’s return to international rugby is reward for his consistent performances for Warriors over the last two seasons.

Although he had little chance to influence of the outcome at Murrayfield, Weir was on the pitch when Scotland clinched the win that inflicted a first defeat of the campaign on France.

Weir is the fifth Warriors player to represent Scotland following du Preez, Ben Hinshelwood, Euan Murray and David Denton.

Luke Scully, another Warriors fly-half, also finished on the winning side in the Under-20s Six Nations as Wales beat their England counterparts 23-22 at Kingsholm in Gloucester on Friday.

Scully, a member of the Three Pears Warriors Academy, recovered from illness to win his second Under-20s cap and came on as  second half replacement for Jacob Beetham of Cardiff Blues.
