Weir back with a bang in Scotland win

Warriors fly-half Duncan Weir helped Scotland to a 28-17 bonus point victory over Italy in their Autumn Nations Cup opener in Florence.

Weir was making his first international start in four-and-a-half years and settled back into the role by converting all four of Scotland’s tries to finish with eight points from a 100 per cent kicking record.

Weir also crossed Italy’s line early in the second half but his try was disallowed by referee Luke Pearce after TMO Wayne Barnes spotted a forward pass to the fly-half from Chris Harris.

Scotland had to come from behind to secure a fifth straight win victory as Italy went 11-7 up at half-time, but they showed their resilience with a disciplined second half display which broke the Italians’ resistance and eroded their lead.

Weir, who won his 29th cap, had a busy match in attack and defence as well as controlling the game well. He also ended the game with a swollen right eye, an injury that required treatment in the second half.

Scotland’s tries came from wing Duhan van der Merwe in the first half, Zander Fagerson, Scott Cummings and George Turner in the second.
