James Scott follows flat-mate Morris in extending contract

Lock James Scott has become the latest Warriors player to commit his future to the club by signing a contract extension.

The former England Under-20s international was promoted from the Three Pears Warriors Academy last summer and is currently gaining valuable experience on loan at Glasgow Warriors in the Guinness Pro-14.

“James, like all young players is desperate to play. Over the last six months he has trained really hard and matured both  as a player and as a bloke,” said Warriors Head Coach Jonathan Thomas.

“Lock is a position where we have quite a lot of depth at the moment so there is just a little bit of patience needed from Scotty.

“But he’s gone up to Glasgow and impressed those guys up there. It’s a good opportunity for him as a player and also a person. It’s a good life experience for him.

“There are not many guys in the country of his size who are athletic as well. He’s also a good leader, he’s got a wise head on young shoulders in terms of his lineout calling and his maturity around that area of the game.

“We feel that he is an exciting prospect but he also has the potential to be a really good leader for the club in the future as well.”

Scott follows his flat-mate Joe Morris, who signed a contract extension on Monday, in extending his stay at Sixways.

“Joe and myself had a lot of talks in our flat about what we wanted to do and staying at the club seemed like a no-brainer,” Scott said.

“Being able to experience a different club atmosphere and coaching style up at Glasgow has been brilliant for me personally, it’s enabled me to pick up new tips and ideas for my own game.

“I’ve been at Worcester for almost four years now and there’s been a lot of change during that time, but it seems that there is now a focus on retention and building a squad for the future.

“There has been a real buy-in from the squad since the new coaches came in, we’re building a good group of players and beginning to see a quality culture developing, which I’m enjoying being part of.”

Scott, 21,  played his formative rugby at Bishop of Hereford Bluecoat School and then Malvern College and joined the Senior Academy at Sixways in 2017.

He made his senior debut as a replacement in the stunning European Challenge Cup win over Stade Francais in Paris in October 2018 and has now made nine senior appearances as well as playing for Hartpury in the Greene King IPA Championship on a dual registration.

“It is terrific to see another of our young, homegrown lads commit to the club,” said Warriors Director of Rugby Alan Solomons.

“Scotty is still in the infancy of his career as a lock, but has already shown that he has the potential to make his mark in the Premiership.

“He is a particularly good lineout operator and this season has made good gains in his physical development.

“His current loan to Glasgow Warriors is proving to be of huge benefit as his game time with us has been limited because of the impact of COVID.

“Scotty is a great lad and we are delighted that he is continuing his rugby journey with us here at Sixways.”
