Warriors confirm pre-season matches

Warriors supporters will have their first opportunities to see the club’s 14 new signings in action when United Rugby Championship sides Connacht and Glasgow Warriors visit for pre-season matches in September.

Connacht are first up on Friday September 3 (kick-off 7.45pm) with Glasgow following on Friday September 10 (kick-off 7.00pm).

Those games will be the first played at Sixways since March 6 2020 when an the size of crowd is not restricted by COVID-19 regulations.

Warriors’ new recruits include British and Irish Lions pair Duhan van der Merwe and Rory Sutherland, Wales hooker Scott Baldwin, former Wales fly-half Owen Williams, England international scrum-half Willi Heinz, Tonga number eight Sione Vailanu and experienced Gallagher Premiership players Matt Garvey, Will Chudley and Christian Judge.

Connacht are no strangers to Sixways having visited twice in the European Challenge Cup with Warriors winning 30-20 in 2005/06 and drawing 24-24 in 2017/18.

The visit of Glasgow for what is being billed as The Clash between the two Warriors will see Duncan Weir make a swift return to Sixways.

The Scotland fly-half became a firm favourite with Warriors’ supporters during his three seasons at Sixways before he opted to return to Glasgow, where his professional career began, ahead of the 2021/22 season.

This will be Glasgow’s first-ever visit to Sixways and Warriors have committed to a reciprocal match at Scotstoun in 2022.

Warriors will complete their preparations for the new season with a trip to Greene King IPA Championship club Cornish Pirates on Saturday September 11 (kick-off 5.00pm).

Warriors have developed strong links with Cornish Pirates with centre Will Butler enjoying a successful loan spell with them last season and tighthead prop Jay Tyack moving in the opposite direction on a permanent deal.

Warriors are no strangers to the Mennaye Field having played Pirates three times in the Championship and have yet to lose there.

Warriors won there 49-24 in March 2004 on the way to winning promotion to the Premiership for the first time.

A narrow 33-30 win followed in November 2011 with Warriors easing to a 69-8 win on their last visit to the Mennaye Field in April 2015.

Warriors kick-off the new Gallagher Premiership season against London Irish at Sixways on Saturday September 18 (kick-off 3.00pm).
