Match Report | Newcastle Falcons Under-18s 31-10 Warriors Under-18s

Warriors Under-18s produced a performance of two distinct halves as Newcastle Falcons eased to a bonus point win in the Premiership Rugby Under-18 Academy League at Kingston Park.

Warriors made the long trek to Tyneside seeking a third straight win in the competition but the result was decided in the first half when Newcastle scored five tries and opened up a 31-5 lead.

The second half saw Warriors shore up their defence and score the only points of the period when captain Theo Mayell went over eight minutes from time.

The second-half recovery gave Warriors some encouragement but it was not enough to reward them with a bonus point or two.

Nor could it mask the disappointment of the first half performance when Newcastle played the game at pace, preyed on

Warriors errors and opened up a 14 points lead before hooker Loic Keasey responded with a try from a lineout drive.

But Newcastle ended the half strongly and ran in three more tries before the break.

Warriors tightened up defensively in the second period and, with centre Will Pugh leading the way, they successfully frustrated Newcastle for the full 35 minutes.

Patience in attack was rewarded when Mayell finished off a period of sustained pressure for another unconverted try.

Warriors Under-18s are next in action on Saturday February 5 when Leicester Tigers are the visitors to Sixways (kick-off 2.00pm) for their penultimate match in the Northern Conference.
