Gareth Simpson commits to Warriors for two more years

Warriors’ scrum-half Gareth Simpson has committed his future to the club by signing a new two-year contract.

Simpson has been a stand-out performer this season, forging an exciting half-back partnership with Fin Smith and playing a key role in Warriors’ Premiership Rugby Cup success including a brace of tries in the semi-final victory at Gloucester.

The 24-year-old arrived at Sixways on trial in the second half of the 2018/19 season and was then offered a place on the Three Pears Warriors Academy.

He signed his first professional contract two years ago and has now made 47 appearances for Warriors, 23 of them this season.

“I’m very pleased to be staying with Warriors. It’s an exciting time for the club with Steve Diamond coming in, some good signings for next season and I’m really looking forward to what’s to come ,” Simpson said.

“Winning the Premiership Cup was awesome. It’s the first top-flight final, it was fantastic to be involved in it and I am really proud of the whole squad.

“It was a squad effort and to get that win was really special for the club. It sets us up nicely for next season and hopefully we can start with a bang.

“Warriors gave me my opportunity so I do owe this club a lot which is why I am trying to give my all.

“I want this club to go places. That final is a good start but hopefully in the next few years we can keep progressing up the table.”

Simpson, who was born in Coventry but raised in South Africa, played for Kwa-Zulu Natal in Durban and had a spell with Wellington RFC in New Zealand before he paid his way to England and played for Stourbridge in National Two North while he was on trial at Sixways.

“Simmo has done remarkably well this season and he is mature above his years,” said Warriors Lead Rugby Consultant Steve Diamond.

“He and Fin will be cornerstones of the squad for many years to come.”
