Van der Merwe scores twice in pulsating third test

Duhan van der Merwe scored twice in a pulsating third Test against Argentina in Santiago del Estero, which saw the hosts snatch the series with the last play of the game.

Warriors duo Van der Merwe and Rory Sutherland both started the match, with the former registering the first score of the contest on 13 minutes when he took Blair Kinghorn’s neat pass to sprint clear.

His second came eight minutes into the second half when he went looking for work directly in front of the Los Pumas’ posts and quick thinking at the breakdown enabled him to crash over.

The contest ebbed and flowed with Argentina keeping pace with Scotland’s try-scoring exploits throughout. Looking like they would be heading home with a hard-fought series win, Scotland had to defend against one last scrum which the home side dominated, and the ball was spun wide to wing Emiliano Boffelli, who crossed in the corner to give Argentina a 34-31 victory.
