Matt Rogerson announces retirement from rugby at end of the season

Thursday 21 May 2026

Worcester Warriors can confirm that back-row Matt Rogerson will be retiring from rugby at the end of the 2025/26 season.

Rogerson joined the Warriors from Leicester Tigers and was named Club Captain at the start of the season.

Matt started his rugby journey at Vale of Lune in Lancashire, and via Loughborough University, he signed a first professional contract at Sale Sharks back in 2015.

After leaving Sale, Rogerson headed to Jersey Reds, spending a season with the Island side before joining London Irish for the 2018/19 season.

While at Irish, Rogerson saw a promotion to the Premiership and as captain, guided the side to their first Champions Cup experience.

Matt won over 100 caps for London Irish before moving to Leicester Tigers in 2023 following Irish’s administration.

Rogerson featured 28 times for the Tigers, including coming off the bench in last year’s Premiership final at Twickenham.

Speaking on his decision to retire, Matt said, “I appreciate that I was initially going to be staying on for next season, but unfortunately, after some time reflecting and a pretty rough season with injuries, I feel like the time is right.

“I think my body hasn’t lived up to the way I wanted to for the last twelve months – I’ve had to chase it around a little bit to try and get myself on the field.”

“Combined with having a young family and having a lot of time away from them at the moment to pursue my career has led me to take this decision.”

“But from the bottom of my heart, I really want to thank all the Warriors fans out there for all your support in me joining this club, which has been incredible, and I’ve loved every minute of it, even though it’s been a really challenging year.”
