Jones determined to take cup chance

Fit again fly half star Matthew Jones is determined to stake his claim for more Guinness Premiership action as the Warriors prepare for a month of cup action.

Former Wales international Jones has returned to the Warriors squad after a long term foot injury and is set to start the Amlin Challenge Cup clash Olympus Rugby XV Madrid at Sixways Stadium on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

And the 25-year-old knows he must take his chance to make amark in Europe and the LV= Cup before Mike Ruddock’s men return to top-flight action with a trip to Wembley to face Saracens on February 13.

“It’s great to be back and I am happy and settled here. Now I just hope I can put my mark on this block of games,” said Jones, who speaks in ‘The Warrior’ match day programme that will be on sale around Sixways on Saturday.

“It has been four or five weeks since I’ve been back in the squad now and I’m just itching to get as much game time as I can.

“My first game back was Connacht here at home and I got a good half an hour under my belt. I got a start the next game out in Ireland and have been involved in the remainder of the games.

“I just want to really get back into it. Willie (Walker) has been the ten for a while now and he has done very well.

“It is down to me now to put as much pressure on him as I can and I’m sure he is thinking the same thing with his spot and wants to keep the jersey.

“In terms of the European game, I don’t know too much about Madrid, I was injured the last time we played them so have looked back at the tapes,” he added.

“There is not much anyone knows about them, but we have just got to give them plenty of respect and be professional to make sure we get the right result and I take my chance.”
