Coach Billy McGinty has stressed the importance of Worcester’s final Amlin Challenge Cup pool game with Montpellier – urging the young Warriors to take the chance to shine in France.
Warriors complete the club’s Pool 2 fixtures with a trip to Montpellier – who won a tight clash 22-17 when the two teams last met at Sixways in October.
McGinty has hinted the coaching staff will again give youth the chance to push their first team claims and revealed the importance of the game has been underlined to the squad in the run up to the fixture.
“When we looked at these games we felt it was a good opportunity for some of the youngsters who are on the fringe of the first team to have a bit of game time,” he said.
“It’s very difficult to play just one game so when we discussed it as coaches we felt we would give them a couple of games to show what they can do.
“Against Madrid we learnt something about the players and they learnt something about the game. We didn’t start particularly well and didn’t stick to what we planned to do. But the second half we had a better kicking game, secured the ball a lot more and kept it longer to score some decent tries.
“We wanted to see lads put their hands up, we wanted the likes of Matt Cox, Jake Abbott and James Collins to step up. They did at the weekend and that was nice to see – now they need to do it again.
“In terms of the competition, unfortunately we came unstuck at home to Montpellier at home which was a shame,” he added.
“We still wanted to do well in the competition and when we played Connacht at home we did everything to win the game, but they got a few breakaway tries and a few things didn’t go our way.
“But we still look at this final game positively and we want to go out and win and perform.
“It certainly matters to the players and we have stressed to them how important this game is. We don’t want them to go out and just go through the motions. We want them to perform and they are professional rugby players who get paid to do a job so we expect them to do just that.”
