Ruddock reveals Jones departure

Warriors boss Mike Ruddock has confirmed that fly half Matthew Jones will depart Sixways at the end of the season following the signing of Andy Goode.

Director of Rugby Ruddock has praised the contribution of Jones, who has made 25 appearances for the club and scored 114 points, and indicated he could be set for a move to Wales.

“With Andy coming in I have had to make some tough decisions and one of those is that Matthew Jones will leave us at the end of the season,” he said.

“I spoke to Matthew and it is a shame to let him go as he is a great player, unfortunately he has had a few injuries with us over the last two years. That has probably stopped him making the progress with us that we wanted.

“But Matthew is very professional and there is every chance he will be needed before the end of the season to make big display, whether that is off the bench or starting.

“I have spoken to him about that and I know he will do that as and when he is required to do so.

“I know there are a few Welsh regions looking at him so it could be that we see Matthew back down to Wales. I hope it all works out for him as he is a lovely guy.”

Ruddock has also indicated that more signings and current players penning new contracts are also in the pipeline.

“We have a couple of announcements around the corner and I think we will be announcing another international player joining us next week,” he added.

“In that process we will be announcing that we have retained a number of players from the current squad.

“Everything is going to plan for next season, but the main thing at the moment is that we get everything right for this term and we make sure we stay in the Guinness Premiership.”
