Marcel Garvey has called on rugby fans across the city and region to ‘make a big difference’ by getting right behind Worcrster Warriors in the massive home RFU Championship semi-final with Bedford Blues on Sunday, May 1 (kick-off 12.15pm).
Speedster Garvey was one of eight different try scorers last Saturday as Warriors thrilled a big Sixways crowd in a record-breaking victory over Bristol Rugby.
The flying back – who launched the rout with an eighth minute score – has revealed a vocal home support at the weekend had given the team a huge lift as they cut loose in the second period.
And now he has urged even more fans to pour through the turnstiles and create an unforgettable and memorable atmosphere when the team faces the Blues in a huge play-off fixture as they chase the Premiership dream.
“Our supporters are massively important to us,” said Garvey. “Despite being relegated last season, they have stuck with us and the crowds are getting better and better. It would be great to see even more faces for the semi-final.
“It’s a real positive to the lads to see so many fans in. It was a great atmosphere on Saturday and we got a big crowd on the day when it all came together, hopefully the new fans will want to come back now too.
“The boys talked about the crowd in the dressing room before the game. We knew people were going to come in big numbers through the gates so it was great to perform so well for them. We are always grateful for their backing.
“The semi-final is big – we know what is resting on it. Promotion is a massive factor for the city and we need the buzz you get when lots of supporters come through the gates.
“We want as many there as we possibly can. Every fan can make a big difference and add to what I am sure will be a superb atmosphere.”
Garvey admitted the Warriors were delighted with the second half show against Bristol, but were keeping their feet on the ground about the coming fixture with the Blues.
“It was nice to see everything we had worked on in training come off,” he added. “We kept calm and when things opened up in the last 30 minutes we looked to cut loose.
“Bristol started to crumble and to score that many points, in the manner we did, was a huge positive before the league semi-final.
“We are not getting ahead of ourselves, though, we are not world beaters yet and I expect it to be a lot closer in both semi-finals.
“As a team, we have kept our heads down and worked hard to get better. We now feel we are playing well and there is a real buzz and excitement in the squad ahead of the semi-finals.”
Garvey could also become the latest Sixways star to hit the hundred as he made his 99th appearance for the club in the Bristol win.
However, the jet-heeled wing has only one thing on his mind and added: “I’ve seen it could be my 100th game for the club, which is a nice milestone. But this is not about me, it’s about the club and city and a win is the most important factor on that day.”
