Impressive Muagututia pushing for starts

Phil Davies praised the impact of his younger pack members after European joy over Banca Monte Crociati – and believes Number Eight Richard Muagututia was getting better and better with each passing week.

Samoa international Muagututia was handed  starting shirt in the 55-10 win and produced one stunning powerful run down the middle in the second half that had Sixways on its feet.

The all-action back row’s performance backed up another spirited display for the Worcester Cavaliers on Monday night and left Davies to admit he was pushing for more senior rugby.

Davies said: “Richard is developing. He still has a long way to go, but he is a great lad.

“It’s the first time he has been outside of Samoa – that is a big change for him with a different environment.

“He is getting better and he can certainly carry the ball and is hard to stop, as we saw with that barnstorming second half run.

“He is closing in on that first team spot but he still has a bit of work to do.

“I was pleased with the front row that came on,” added Davies. “James Currie, Ollie Hayes and George Porter are all under 23-years-old with excellent futures so we are pleased that they did well.

“Ollie Frost came on and was his usual dynamic self, but generally they all did a good job.”

Meanwhile, Davies felt the experiment to play Miles Benjamin at outside centre had also been a positive one as the wing grabbed one of nine tries scored on the day.

“Miles will also get over the game line – he is a big powerful player,” admitted Davies.

“He has been wanting to have a go in the centre for a while and this was an opportunity to get that chance and I thought he did well.”
