Head Coach Richard Hill has urged his team to make more of their possession when they are inside the opposition’s 22.
Hill watched his side enter London Wasps’ 22 on 15 separate occasions in their Aviva Premiership clash last Sunday without getting a point.
The six points Warriors did accumulate came from a long distance drop-goal and a penalty, leading Hill to stress the importance of converting possession into points.
“The key problem we had at Wasps was the inability to finish off once we were in the opposition 22,” said Hill.
“You have to come away with points when you’re in the 22. We’re looking for a try but when we’re in that position we expect at least a penalty.
“When you have the chance to put pressure on the opposition, the thing they want most is for you to lose possession and relieve that pressure.”
Warriors travel to Spain this weekend to take on Bizkaia Gernika RT in their opening Amlin Challenge Cup match of the season.
Gernika have started the Spanish domestic season in fine fashion, winning all of their opening five fixtures, and they are currently six points clear at the top of the table.
Hill admits his side must now show they have the capability of scoring tries when they get in good positions.
He said: “It’s an opportunity for the players to go to Spain and make sure we come back with a bonus point win. It will come as no surprise to learn that our concentration this week has been on scoring tries when we have the chance.
“We have a structure and players know what they’re doing. We have to work as a team in those scenarios so we’ve made sure everyone is quite clear on what they’ve got to do when they get in the 22.
“The match against Gernika will also give us the chance to work on our strategies so we get them right when we return to Aviva Premiership action against Sale and Exeter.”
