Game of the Month – Paramatta Touch

The Worcester Warriors Community Team offer up a new game for coaches of all abilities to use to develop core skills and maximise game understanding. For December we have Paramatta Touch!

Audience:
Suitable for junior and senior teams to work on handling, creating/utilising space, spatial awareness, decision making and attacking space.

Game Rules:
Cone off an area of approximately 60 by 40 metres and place a central line of cones widthways on the pitch. Cone off one 10 by 40 metre box at each end of the pitch, these will be the defensive zones. An overloaded attacking team (e.g. 6 attackers v 3 defenders) will start from the central cones and attack one of the defensive zones. Each defensive zone will have a small team of defenders who can’t leave the zone and have to try and touch the ball carrier to prevent the attack from continuing. If the ball carrier is touched or there is a knock on, forward pass or any foul play, the attacking team must turn and attack the other defensive zone. If the attack scores, the defensive team must run to the central cones and back to their zone before the attacking team return. This continues for a set time or for a set amount of opportunities.

Progressions/Regressions:

  • Amount of attackers/defenders. You may want to increase attacking numbers to increase the likelihood of attacking success. Comparatively, you may look to put the attack under greater pressure and add defenders (6 attackers and 4 defenders, as opposed to 3).
  • Vary the length of pitch- make attackers and defenders work harder. Placing greater emphasis on skills under fatigue.
  • Vary the size of the defensive zone to give players less/more space to utilise. Most training games need to be realistic, and sometimes coaches tend to give players too little or too much space to attack into. Force players to create their own space and use footwork.

Coaching Points:

  • Commit the defenders with ball in hand. Try and commit multiple defenders using footwork.
  • Pass into space.
  • Be creative and unpredictable. Don’t be afraid to try switches/change running lines to move or stand up defenders. Try and manipulate defenders by changing your running line before you receive the ball.

This game will really develop any team’s ability with ball in hand. Not only will it encourage players to try and commit defenders and pass to an effective option, it will also develop their ability to attack space.
