Warriors Academy U19s recorded a 34-5 victory over Sale Sharks U19s after a determined and clinical five-try blast at Sixways.
Centre Greg King grabbed a brace and Charlie Fellows, Tom Wheatcroft and Haloti Molatika all crossed for tries as Warriors turned on the style just four days after the first team also tasted success over the same club.
A crowd of over 300 fans gathered on pitch two to watch the club’s rising stars in action and were not disappointed as they produced another impressive display to build on the recent success over Leicester Tigers U19s.
And Academy boss Andrew Stanley was full of praise for the manner in which his squad had tackled the game.
“Defensively that was a more comprehensive performance than we managed against Leicester, we were also more clinical and took the opportunities that were created by a great defensive effort,” he said.
“We matched a very physical Sale side that is difficult to beat, the margin of victory is one I am very pleased about.
“Our defence stopped them from getting into the game and gaining any platform. And in the final quarter of the game we put away our openings very well.”
Worcester flew out of the traps and showed their intent in the opening two minutes when fly half Joe Carlisle picked out Miles Benjamin with a cross field kick and the speedy winger caused panic with a battling run.
Warriors did not have to wait long for the first score when Daniel Willis charged down a kick deep in the Sale half and quick hands fed Molatika who bulldozed over from close range for a 5-0 lead.
Carlisle added a confident penalty two minutes later as Worcester dominated early possession and territory and refused to let the visitors settle.
Sharks did finally manage to apply some pressure and were rewarded on 21 minutes when a break from Bates saw them camped on the Worcester line. Eventually it was the flanker who had started the move who crashed over the line from close range to reduce the lead to 8-5.
Worcester responded with Benjamin, Dave Hughes and Rob Wood narrowly kept out by a hard-working Sale defence while Jonny Arr, captain for the night, hacked forward only for Sharks to again smother the danger.
Sale were reduced to 14 men just before the break when Parrot was yellow carded by referee Steve Johnson and Worcester made the numerical advantage count. Fellows made a clean break in midfield and King cruised in the right corner. The conversion by Carlisle gave Warriors the comfort of a 15-5 half-time lead.
The opening stages of the second half were disrupted in bizarre fashion by a goose that wandered onto the pitch to try and tried to play its part in the action.
When play did resume it was the hosts who again showed more cutting edge with King delivering a delicious dummy to fool the Sale defence before sprinting home. Carlisle again added the extras for a 22-5 lead.
Charley Thomas continued to take the fight to Sale with a powerful surge through the middle and the home supporters did not have to wait long for try number four when Warriors again showcased their young talent.
Slick hands and the ability to arrive on the ball at pace cut huge holes in the Sharks defence and this time it was Fellows who profited to score in the far left corner.
The Worcester forwards were proving a menacing proposition for Sale all over the field as they disrupted any visiting attack and the penalty count slowly piled up and began to really hurt the Sharks.
With the backs going through the gears it seemed only a matter of time before Warriors would press the accelerator again to force home their dominance.
Twice Fellows impressed as he burst through and showed real pace before his kick forward just had too much power and ran into touch. Minutes later he again made a clean break but this time his lofted pass out wide just failed to find hands.
However, there was to be a final flourish four minutes from time when full back Tom Wheatcroft dived over after more fluent interplay and Carlisle slotted another deadly accurate kick through the posts to complete the scoring.
