Junior Warriors crowned kings of England

Worcester Rugby Club’s Under 12s have been crowned the best team in the country – after going six years without losing a match, not conceding a score in two seasons and tasting victory at Twickenham!

The A team were this season the winners of the North Midlands Cup, Kieran Bracken Trophy, Hinckley and Worcester Tournaments.

And they also claimed a place at Twickenham on May 28 as one of the preliminary matches to the England Saxons versus Scotland B fixture.

To qualify for a visit to the home of rugby, a squad of 16 players played six matches at the Nottingham Tournament. Played over the Easter weekend and knowing that a good performance would secure the trip of a lifetime to Twickenham, they won five matches and drew the other. The all round strength of the side was highlighted at Nottingham where they scored a total of 19 tries – spread out amongst 11 of the players.

They qualified for Twickenham as one of the best four teams in the country, for the second year running. On May 28 they played the semi-final against Newbury RFC with the resultant draw being sufficient to see them through to the final. In the final the Under 12s met their old adversaries Sandal RFC, having played them six times over the last three years and drawing every game! This year the outcome was different and a second half try from a set penalty move saw Bradley Pogson score the only try of the match to see Worcester crowned as the best team in the country. It was a great way to finish off the boy’s participation in Mini Rugby.

The Under 12’s A team – kindly sponsored by A.G.Shakespeare Ltd – were presented with their Twickenham kit by Warriors Director of Rugby Mike Ruddock. The boys also got to quiz the new Sixways boss in a question and answer session.

The club has now invited the Under 12s to parade the trophy at the first home game of the season. Congratulations to the entire team from everyone at Sixways!
