Warriors hit the heights!

Worcester Warriors backroom team have raised thousands of pounds for charity after successfully tackling the gruelling 24-hour Three Peaks Challenge.

The Sixways support staff scaled the highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales during the first weekend in June to raise money for the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS).

Conditioner Stuart Pickering, Academy coach Lee Douglas, physiotherapist Mike Lancaster, community coaches Matt Sherratt and Mike Panoho and marketing and match day co-ordinator Chris Townend climbed Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon to support deaf children and their families.

The team completed the challenge in 22 hours and 19 minutes to claim second place in the event. But team leader Pickering admitted just taking part and raising valuable funds had made the trip a rewarding experience.

“The Three Peaks Challenge was a brutal experience for all of us and very demanding but we have raised lots of money to support deaf children which makes every hard yard worth while,” said Pickering.

“To come second in our first attempt was fantastic and the boys all had a real sense of achievement when we reached the finish point.

“The team would like to thank both npower for their support and Green Line Vehicle Rentals who kindly gave us the minibus to travel to the event and between the climbs. We were also very grateful to the organisers who staged such a professional event.

“We have raised lots of money through sponsorship that continues to pour in from fans and we cannot thank them enough for the support they have given us. We are still taking donations and I would urge supporters to dig deep for such a good cause.”

Helen Williams, NDCS Head of Events, said: “Every day in the UK three babies are born deaf and most are born to hearing parents with no experience of deafness. The NDCS is the only UK charity solely dedicated to the support of deaf children and young people, their families, and professionals working with them and is funded almost entirely through public donations. Our work would not be possible without the commitment of people like the Worcester Warriors team.”
