Warriors select strong Sevens squad

Director of Rugby Mike Ruddock has selected a strong squad to take part in the Middlesex Sevens at Twickenham on Saturday, August 18.

Warriors have named an initial 15-man squad, that will be trimmed down to 12 in the coming weeks, featuring a blend of first team regulars and rising Academy stars for the Sevens tournament.

Skipper Pat Sanderson will lead the squad that also includes Shane Drahm, Thinus Delport, Lee Best and Matt Powell.

England Sevens international Marcel Garvey is also included alongside Miles Benjamin who is currently under consideration for the England squad to play in the IRB International Sevens.

All 12 Guinness Premiership teams will be battling it out in the event with the sides split into four groups of three with the top two from each group making it through to the quarter-finals.

Warriors have been drawn in a group which includes European champions London Wasps and local rivals Gloucester.

“We have selected a very strong Warriors squad with the aim of performing very well in the Middlesex Sevens,” said Ruddock.

“As well as being a strong squad with lots of experience there are a number of young players that are up and coming that we believe will feature at senior level through the course of this season.

“This will be the first opportunity to see some of the players in a competitive situation and together with Clive Griffiths and Billy McGinty we are anticipating some quality rugby.”

The squad will also be playing in the club’s official new orange charity shirt launched in conjunction with Acorns Children’s Hospice.

Each sale of the striking orange playing shirt – which features the Acorns logo, is sponsored by npower and manufactured by official kit suppliers Kukri – will generate a £5 donation to the charity. The new shirt is available NOW in the Sixways Store.
