Griffiths hails the Warrior history makers

Head coach Clive Griffiths hailed the history making Worcester Warriors as they secured a first ever Guinness Premiership victory over Gloucester.

Thinus Delport scored a stunning last minute try as Warriors claimed a 17-14 win after earlier tries from Miles Benjamin and first minute opener from Sam Tuitupou.

Griffiths was full of praise for his troops and admitted the month of March had been a magical one for the club.

“We set out this week to create a bit of history – that has been the theme and thank goodness we got over the line in the last seconds to achieve that,” he said.

“I am very proud for everyone concerned. The month of March has been particularly good for us with three wins and we could have had four.

“We came here today and defended much better in the second half. We were very poor first half around the ruck area and we tightened that up at half-time, we had a few choice words.

“It is never over till it is over and today proved that. We needed that half a chance, this league is so tight and anything can happen. If you hang in there and defend well, like we did in the second half, you can win.

“I felt we created a few chances in the first half, we felt we could even do that in the second half into a strong wind and we just needed some possession and territory. We got that at the end and all credit to the boys for finishing it off.”

Delport stole the headlines as the full back crashed over for a glorious try against his old club and Griffiths was full of praise for the South African.

“I’m sure Thinus enjoyed that against his old club,” added Griffiths. ” He has been outstanding for us, a tremendous professional and he has been a pleasure to work with.

“Since we moved him back to full back he has been a revelation, if anyone deserves the accolades it is Thinus.

“That result will go a long way to keeping us up,” added Griffiths, “there are more games to come and we will just concentrate on our own games and look after our own house.

“We have shown this month the enormous potential in the side. The cohesiveness is now showing, we expected it to happen earlier but we hung in and kept faith. I think we now have a more allround game for this club, that has been our goal since we arrived here.”
