Young star Carlisle set for Bristol start

Mike Ruddock has revealed that rising fly half star Joe Carlisle is pushing to make his first Guinness Premiership start of the season in the clash with Bristol on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

Carlisle, a product of the Academy system at Warriors, has made a number of cameo appearances in the league and cup competitions this season.

The youngster is now set to be handed a starting spot at the Memorial Stadium and chance to impress.

And Director of Rugby Ruddock admits he is keen to see what his young fly half can do on the big stage after a number of stunning performances in the Guinness A League this campaign.

“There is a possibility of a number of changes, we want to make sure we don’t bash the players up too much,” said Ruddock.

“There is every chance that Joe Carlisle could make his debut. That would be fantastic for him.

“If Joe is given the opportunity I would envisage that Sam Tuitupou and Matt Powell would be either side of him. I am keen to see him have a run because he is very talented.

“It is possible that Chris Horsman will be part of the game, if so it would probably be off the bench.

“Dale Rasmussen has also taken a heavy knock to his shoulder so it could be that Rico Gear plays at number 13. Rico is having an injection in his back and hopefully that will put a few niggles he has had to bed.

“He is looking forward to getting it sorted. He wants that last 10 percent to his game, for a player of his ability he wants that extra bit to show what he can do.”

Warriors defeated Bristol earlier in the season and Ruddock admits that, coupled with the fact it is there last game at the Memorial Stadium before redevelopment work starts, will mean the hosts will be fired up.

“Bristol will be looking to ambush us,” he said. “they will want revenge for what happened at Sixways earlier in the season.”

“It is the last game at the Memorial Stadium so they will want to go out with a bang.

“But we will be focussed and ready. Everyone is now competing for a cup final spot, there is lots for us to go for .”
