Warriors help drive Breast Unit Appeal

Worcester Warriors have made sure a fundraising drive for the Worcester Breast Unit Appeal has hit top gear – after raising thousands of pounds by giving fans the chance to win a pink car!

Warriors will host the sold out “Pink Ties & Tiara” Ball at Sixways Stadium this Friday (June 6) to help raise valuable funds for the crucial local appeal.

And at the recent home clash with Bath Rugby – when Sixways went pink-tastic for the day for ‘Tackled Pink’ – the Warriors teamed up with Brooklyn and Universal Display Ltd to give fans a unique chance to win the keys to a new motor!

Fans were asked to guess the registration plate of a pink-themed Ford Fiesta Freedom and over £1,500 has now been raised for the Worcester Breast Unit Appeal.

“As a club we were delighted to be asked to help raise funds for the Worcester Breast Unit Appeal,” said Commercial Director Kathy Leather.

“We have a vast array of staff working here at Sixways who have a great of experience in fundraising and organising events and we felt a unique ‘Pink Ties & Tiara’ ball would be the ideal platform to help highlight and raise funds for the Worcester Breast Unit Appeal.

“Brooklyn Ford kindly donated a car and the creative staff at Universal Banners gave it a fantastic facelift to a really eye-catching shade of pink. Our wonderful fans then really got behind the competition to guess the registration plate.

“So far we have raised over £1,500 and the money is still coming in. We hope to draw the winner this month and hopefully somebody will drive away with a fantastic new car.”

In Worcestershire over 500 breast cancers are diagnosed yearly. Breast cancer is the most common cancer for women and is increasing in frequency. Men also develop breast cancer but it is less common (1% of all breast cancers). Thankfully survival for breast cancer is improving as surgery and treatments develop.

For every one person seen with cancer we will see 11 who don’t. Almost all referred to a breast unit worry that they have cancer. That uncertainty of not knowing can be extremely stressful. This is heightened by having to wait for an appointment to be seen, long waits at the clinic, not having all the investigations at that visit and not having an answer immediately.

Currently, within Worcestershire Royal Hospital, there is no area specifically for Breast patients.  It is the aim of the Worcester Breast Unit Appeal to build a dedicated unit to ensure rapid access, assessment and treatment for breast problems. It would house all relevant staff on one site, improving efficiency and the patients’ experience. By bringing in state of the art equipment, diagnosis will be made rapidly and treatment speeded up. It would also allow for Patient Support Groups meetings, whilst providing educational material for patients and relatives and support local research and training.

The Worcester Breast Unit Appeal is aiming to raise over £1 million over four years to ensure the best care for the local community.
