Warriors cricket bowl them over!

Staff at Worcester Warriors have shown their versatility after swapping sports and taking to the cricket field – and the team have made a flying start to the summer!

The recently formed Worcester Warriors Cricket Club – made up of staff from Sixways Stadium plus a sprinkling of rugby stars – took to the field for the first time ever on Wednesday (June 4) when they faced local side Tibberton Taverners as we look to get even closer to our local community.

The game took place at the picturesque Spetchley Gardens with the local side Tibberton winning the toss and electing to bat first.

After the recent heavy rain the pitch was sluggish and despite good innings from Sheerman (17) and Garner (20) the hosts were eventually bowled out for 67 in 19 overs.

This total was largely down to an energetic fielding display from Warriors – that included four catches in the covers from General Manager Charlie Little – and an accurate bowling display. The chief tormentors for Taverners were Stadium Manager Shaun Roberts (2 for 3), assisted by Community Coach Steve Joslin (2-10) and Academy Conditioning Coach Lee Douglas (2-10).

In reply Warriors were put under severe pressure from the onset and found runs hard to come by, the exception being first team scrum half Jonny Arr (22) and Little (23).

A tense finale saw Warriors edge towards victory needing five runs off the last over. However, any nerves were soon dispelled when Little hit a straight six to win the game by two wickets with five balls to spare.

Both teams played their part in an epic match that was in the balance until the penultimate over. It is hoped with the success of this match that Warriors will again venture on to the cricket field and we look forward to any challenges that may be out there.
