Ruddock calls for winning momentum

Worcester Warriors boss Mike Ruddock has called on his side to use the victory over Sale Sharks as a platform to build momentum in the Guinness Premiership and climb the league table.

Warriors secured a second win of the season on the road – and a hat-trick of wins at Edgeley Park – courtesy of a 17-9 win on Friday night.

Worcester are next in action on Friday when they entertain Newcastle Falcons at Sixways Stadium (kick-off 8pm) hunting a first home win of the campaign.

And Director of Rugby Ruddock has ordered his team to keep up the high standards and look to now kick on and go on a winning run.

“We want this to build momentum. I have always said that if you get a confident team you have more chance of stringing results together,” he said.

“Confidence comes from playing well and confidence comes from winning. If we can build on this and become more confident because of it and pick up another result next week that will do wonders for us.

“We are a good team and there are good players out there. There was really good shape to our game at times in attack and defence, if we kicked our goals we would have been far ahead and avoided some of the nerves we had in the final ten minutes.”

Ruddock was full of praise for the manner in which his team performed at Sale in front of the Sky cameras.

“The first half was nip and tuck but I thought we started really well with some good width, which was important for us,” he added.

“At 6-6 at half-time I felt we had the better of the first half but hadn’t managed to penetrate their defence and I asked the boys to carry on playing that way because I felt eventually we would get an opportunity.

“They were experienced players down in the scrum so it was an area we wanted to target and go at. If there is a weakness that is what you need to go at and we got some results from it.

“We enjoy playing at Edgeley Park and we deserved our win, we know Sale had some players missing so it was important we didn’t let this opportunity pass us by.”
