Luscombe faces Bath fitness race

Worcester Warriors coach Billy McGinty has revealed that star centre Hal Luscombe faces a fitness race to make the Guinness Premiership clash with Bath Rugby at Sixways Stadium on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

Wales international Luscombe has suffered a calf injury and will have an injection on Thursday in a bid to make the big match.

If he fails to make the date, McGinty believes Loki Crichton can push for a starting spot as Warriors look for a massive win in the league.

“Hal is going to be 50/50 to play Bath on Saturday as he has a problem with his calf muscle,” said McGinty.

“We initially thought it was calf strain but it looks like he has a problem with his back that has caused it, he will have an injection in his back. Hopefully he will be fit for the weekend.

“If not we have Loki who has played in that position before which is great. He’s a strong tackler and he also gives us another pair of hands closer to the ball. It means we don’t play off 10 all the time, we can play another pass out, we can play off 12 so we can hopefully attack a little more wider.

“Apart from Hal we are only really looking at the long term injuries and Chris Latham is fine.

“Chris Horsman should also be fit in a few weeks. He has gone to revisit a specialist to get news.

“It could be that he has an old injury which has inflamed up again due to an accident in training, which is unfortunate because has been playing the best rugby I have seen him play since he has been here.”

Warriors will also have loan signing Willie Walker to call upon in the home clash but McGinty admitted the versatile back looked set for a place on the replacements bench.

“It’s probably going to be a bit too much to ask for Willie to step up and take control. He’s going to be on the bench and hopefully we can introduce him during some part of the game,” added Mc Ginty.

“Willie is going to bring a lot of experience a lot of ability to the team. He’s very flexible in positions, he can play wing, 12, 13, 10 and full back. In terms of his strongest position I would say fly half or full back position, which will help us massively just in case the likes of Chris Latham goes down or we get another injury.”
