Garvey plans flying European start

Wing wonder Marcel Garvey has set his sights of getting Worcester Warriors off to a flying start in the Amlin Challenge Cup against Montpellier – and continuing his red-hot scoring streak against European opponents.

Garvey has scored in both homes league games this season and is set for a return to the squad for the visit of Montpellier to Sixways Stadium on Thursday (kick-off 7.45pm).

The speedster also boasts an outstanding record in Europe having bagged six tries in his last seven games – and now he wants to add to that record when the French arrive this week.

“We have spoken as a team about Europe at length – it is a big target for us,” said Garvey, speaking to ‘The Warrior’ matchday programme.

“Montpellier need little introduction to us because we played them at home in the quarter finals a few seasons ago. It was a difficult game and they came back at us very strongly in the second half.

“They have a few international players who will need to be very aware of, like flanker Fulgence Ouedraogo who scored against us last time and François Trinh-Duc who pulls the strings for them.

“On a personal level, it would be good to continue the run of tries, but as long as were winning I don’t mind who scores.”

Garvey has been one of the stand-out performers for Warriors in the opening weeks of the new season.

And the Gloucester born wing concedes he is now playing with a smile on his face and full of confidence.

He added: “The team has started with plenty of confidence and that makes a big impact on performances.

“The backline this season is immense. We feel we could be one of the best back divisions in the Guinness Premiership and know if we perform well we can put points on any team.”
