Coaching team praised for call-ups

Director of Rugby Mike Ruddock has praised the coaching team at Warriors after home-grown stars Miles Benjamin and Tom Wood were both named in the England Saxons squad to face Ireland A at Bath on Sunday (kick-off 2pm).

Academy products Wood and Benjamin have both been selected after impressing for Worcester this season while Matt Mullan is away with the senior England set-up and Alex Grove with Scotland ahead of the Six Nations.

Ruddock said: “The guys getting these call-ups is testament to all the hard work being done throughout our whole organisation.

“Our Academy coaches have done a fantastic job, as have all the guys in the system at our satellite centres who have done a magnificent job to give us these options.

“Andrew Stanley, Gary Meechan and all their conditioners and medical team are doing a great job to bring them through and make sure they are in good nick for us and are potential candidates to play at an elite level.

“The best of these then get invited by me to train with the first team when people like Tony Windo, Billy McGinty and Matt Powell help with their expertise on the coaching side to give them the chance to progress.

“I need to have the belief that I can put them in and they will deliver for me over the longer term. I think we’ve shown that with a lot of players. We have belief in them because our system is so good.

“We know the sort of guys that are coming through are good professionals and will try and do the best they can,” added Ruddock.

“First and foremost they are athletes, that is part of the modern game, but we are also developing good people and good rugby players.

“For every three or four guys we keep there is always the chance that one or two may look to go elsewhere, that is the ratio and the nature of the beast. But if we keep producing a lot of numbers we will be in a good position over the coming years.”
