Benjamin aims to take Saxons chance

Wing wonder Miles Benjamin is determined to take his opportunity to shine for England Saxons when they face Ireland A at the home of Bath Rugby on Sunday (kick-off 2pm).

Benjamin is among the replacements and Worcester team-mate Tom Wood will start in the back row at The Recreation Ground as the Sixways duo prepare for Saxons debuts.

Solihull speedster Benjamin, who has grabbed five tries this season, knows this is a big opening for him to showcase his skills on the international stage.

“I’m delighted to have been called up by the Saxons as I have been waiting for my opportunity to come along,” said the 21-year-old.

“Everyone sort of knows each other from playing in the Guinness Premiership, but it was nice to have a little time to get to know each other better.

“Hopefully I will get some game time against Ireland A because now I’m in the squad I desperately want to play. I don’t want to be here just to make up the numbers in training.

“The Saxons lost to Ireland A 49-20 in the Churchill Cup over the summer, so we will be looking to make up for that, but Irish rugby in general is on the up at the moment, so it will be a tough challenge.

Benjamin has also saluted the number of home-grown young Warriors that have earned international recognition in recent times.

“It is nice to finally feel we are playing hard week in, week out and the players are starting to get the recognition for that,” he added.

“I definitely feel we can achieve international recognition while playing for Worcester – a lot of players have already extended their deals which shows that they believe in what is happening at Sixways.

“For me, Worcester gives me the ideal opportunity to develop my game.”
