Worcester Warriors back row Matt Kvesic and RFU Coach Chris Hargreaves, based at Warriors, were celebrating after picking up awards at the annual City of Worcester Sports Awards at Worcestershire County Cricket Club’s Graeme Hick Pavilion.
Warriors Academy hot prospect and England Under 18 ace Kvesic, who made his senior debut this season in the LV=Cup clash with Scarlets, was named the Junior Male of the Year.
The 17-year-old became the youngest Warrior in the professional era when he came on in the 66th minute, 204 days younger than Andrew Higgins when he made his debut against Manchester in September 1999.
Community Rugby Coach Chris Hargreaves was also among the winners on the night as he won the Community Sports Award.
Chris started work at Sixways Stadium as a Community Rugby Coach last year with a focus on disabled performers. One of only three roles of its kind in the country and the first to be based at a Guinness Premiership club, the appointment provided the North Midlands with a new resource dedicated to coaching and sporting activities for disabled performers.
Hargreaves joined other members of the Community development team following funding for the post is provided by the RFU, Worcester Warriors, the English Federation of Disability Sport and npower, Warriors’ principle community partners.
The awards were presented by Worcester-based blind footballer Ajmal Ahmed, who has represented England and Great Britain, and the mayor of Worcester, Andy Roberts.
Other winners on the night were: Club of the Year: Black Pear Joggers; Female Sports Personality of the Year: Sue Hawthorn, Worcester Canoe Club; Male Sports Personality of the Year: Ross Iannoccaro, Ju-Jitsu; Junior Female of the Year: Katrina Wilson, Worcester Hon YoSo Kai Karate; Young Volunteer of the Year: Jessica Lugsdin; Volunteer of the Year: Ben Robertshaw; Contribution to physical activity: Haydn Jarrett; Best sporting achievement: Bishop Perowne CE College; Most improved school: Dines Green Primary; Higher Education and Further Education sport award: Matt Bell; Junior Club team of the Year: Warndon Village Sharks U12s; Disability Sports Personality of the Year: James Evans; Coach of the Year: Karen Moore (Worcester Netball Club); Howard Peters’ award for outstanding contribution: Glyn Harding (University of Worcester football coach).
