Ruddock had made a call ahead of the game for fans to crank up the volume in the crunch Guinness Premiership clash and supporters responded with a thunderous response.

“I thought the crowd was just fantastic,” said Ruddock. “Tonight they really got behind us all the way through and really put pressure on our team to lift their game.

“We did that and played really well against a dangerous Newcastle team. The fans cheered everything and were always right behind us.

“It’s at times like these that we expect the team to perform and likewise need the supporters to stay strong. It’s all about home advantage and they really gave us that edge.

“There is still a long way to go, what we want to do was maximise our home games and make that advantage count.

“I actually thought Newcastle moved the ball superbly well and on a number of occasions they made some good line breaks and looked as if they could score.

“But our defence was up to it on the night and kept knocking them back and making our tackles.

“They were strong at half back and made good decisions, in term of switching direction of play and trying to catch us out.

“They varied their play so we are pleased with our defence, our discipline and our forwards who really took it to them in the scrum.”
