Former Worcester legend Thinus Delport is all set for a Sixways playing comeback – as staff members at Warriors are once prepare to take on a team made up of teachers from schools throughout Worcestershire tomorrow night (Tuesday) at Sixways (kick-off 7pm).
Delport is set to play for the Warriors staff team in the match in support of Matt Hampson, a promising talented Leicester Tigers prop forward who sustained a serious neck injury due to a scrummaging accident.
Matt is now known all over the country as the inspirational figure who has given hope to people going through a rough period in their lives, the guy who got injured but wouldn’t take it lying down.
Only just under two years ago, he was an emerging talent in the world of rugby, recognised by the respected as having the capability to go all the way. Then came the moment that changed his life. Matt suffered a dislocation in his neck which had trapped his spinal cord. It has left him paralyzed from the neck down and more determined than ever from the neck up. It is Matt’s spirit and bravery that has earned him such recognition and has pulled together the rugby world who want to take care of one of their own.
Without question, Matt is an incredible young man. He is an Inspiration and motivation to everyone who knows his story. It seems like nothing is too big a challenge for Hambo and with his determination and a little luck, the world really is still very much at his feet.
The Warriors Charity Challenge match was played out last year and was a huge success, with over 1,500 supporters turning out to cheer on the players and support what is a hugely worthwhile cause.
Staff members from all departments at Warriors came together, with past players such as Tony Windo, and Lee Fortey dusting off their boots to add some flair to the occasion. Current members of the first team coaching staff also took part, with Billy McGinty and captain Stuart Pickering among them.
“The game was played in good spirits, but at an extremely competitive intensity,” said Pickering. “We were lucky to come out on top outscoring the teachers three tries to two, a result they will no doubt be extremely keen to avenge. We are feeling confident of once again making a success of the event and are able to add the likes of Matt Powell to the list of players we are able to select from.”
Entry to the game is £3 with onsite parking for £2. Remember – every penny goes to charity!
