Head Coach Richard Hill has vowed to keep being harsh on his Worcester Warriors to ensure they gain a clinical edge in the bid for Championship glory.
Hill admitted his team had plenty to work on after the opening day victory over Birmingham & Solihull – despite claiming a bonus point win with six tries.
And this week he has drilled home the message on the training field ahead of the trip to Brickfields to face Plymouth Albion.
“Winning by 40 points we could cover up the missed chances – but I have got to be harsh on this,” said Hill, who will announce his team for the trip to the south coast on Friday.
“In the first half we squandered five gilt edged chances. We can’t do that against the better teams when you only get a few openings.
“The chances weren’t just opportunities that we could have scored with a bit of luck, for me they were nailed on and we had to score them.
“We have got to learn that when we create a chance, for example when Joe Carlisle went between two defenders and flipped a ball out for a one-on-one with a man outside, we nail it.
“Another came when we had a driving lineout. We drove 25 metres and then a couple of metres from the line we opted to come off the maul and didn’t score. For me, you keep the ball in the maul and it is a try.
“There were one or two that tried too much, wanted to get on the score sheet. We have got to understand that there are systems in place and we do things for a reason. You do things for the team, as perhaps being too over eager.
“I will put that down to early season over eagerness in the first home game. We pointed it out and I would hope that we don’t repeat those things and we improve as Plymouth.”
