Hill pleased by young half back duo

Richard Hill has praised the contribution of young half backs Joe Carlisle and Jonny Arr after sticking with the dazzling duo for the away trip to Plymouth Albion on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

Carlisle contributed 14 points on day one against Birmingham & Solihull while Arr was a constant threat and was unlucky to have a try chalked off in the first half after good work at the scrum.

Hill, a former England scrum half himself, has been pleased by the pair and is keen to see them kick on in the rest of the Championship season.

“I like the way they run things — they both understand how we want to play and make the right decisions,” he said.

“Jonny has a fantastic pass and lovely left kick which can be an advantage. He also has the pace and give him half a chance he will use that. He has an all-round game and we will physically work on him, in our press defence we want him to put big pressure on the base of the scrum.

“We saw against Bees, he managed to get the nine so many times and once he managed to kick it ahead and could have scored from something he created himself. He must have ruined five or six scrums.

“Joey shows lots of flair, can kick the ball, he makes little breaks to attack the line and has got a great pass on him. The two of them are playing well and looking sharp.

“What was pleasing for me was Joey’s goal-kicking against Bees, including a lovely one from the right-hand touchline. It’s important he nails his kicks.

“Joe is a very exciting player. When he gets used to an attacking game, and maybe he’s not been used to doing that all the time, he can be a real talent.”

Hill can once again call on the international talents of Andy Goode and Any Williams from the replacements bench this weekend.

However, he admits both are pushing him for first Championship starts of the current campaign.

“Andy Williams and Andy Goode both came on against Bees and did well, they didn’t put a foot wrong either of them. It was a seamless transition,” he added.

“The difficulty when you come on is that everyone is used to the game and you make a few mistakes and don’t look sharp. Both did what was required –the basics well and kept the rhythm of the game going – they were pretty faultless. I may now look to start the two of them next week.”
