Richard Hill warned his Warriors they needed to learn to adapt better to the tactics being thrown at them as forward-orientated Rotherham Titans threatened to inflict a first defeat of the season on the men from Sixways.
Miles Benjamin and Ed Shervington grabbed tries as Warriors were forced to battle back late in the second half to maintain an undefeated record.
Head Coach Hill admitted his team had not been at their best as they battled to earn enough possession to eventually run out winners on home soil.
He said: “It is a hard league and we have to find out ways to combat it. That was a completely different tactic that we faced today, sides are trying to work out how to play Worcester to negate our play.
“We have to learn, look at the tactics that teams are employing. When we play them the second time around that will be the test of us, to see if we can turn that around. That is the mark of the coaching team and the players.
“When we play Rotherham again we have got to be able to deal with them. But the pleasing thing is that while we are doing that we are winning the games.
“I know people will want a mark and I would give us three out of ten – none of the players will argue. They are happy to come through this test, but we are angry that we didn’t manage to break Rotherham down as well as we should have done.”
Hill pinpointed a missed opportunity at the end of the first half as a key moment as Warriors looked to stamp their authority on the game.
And he ordered his players to stop trying to force the game as they were guilty of handling errors when in possession.
“You have got to kill these teams in the first 20 minutes, particularly the first half, so I was disappointed,” he said.
“We had a great chance at the end of the first half where we made a superb line break and the final pass did not go to hand. I think that would have broken the back of Rotherham and given us a huge lift. I don’t think they would have come back from that.
“But if you make those mistakes and you are not clinical enough they go into the dressing room thinking ‘we can do this, we can hang in here and keep pressurising them.
He added: “If we have got to watch them pick and go for five minutes, when we get the ball we shouldn’t be trying a fancy offload or killer pass within one phase. We made it difficult for ourselves.
“We have got to keep the ball, play more attractive rugby but go through the phases. The players were trying to offload out of the tackle and it was not the appropriate time.
“If you defend for spells you have got to make them do exactly the same. Keep the ball and not do what we did which was to have too much excitement to try and score a try.”
