Kitch keen on Friday night atmosphere

Worcester lock Graham Kitchener is determined to win his fitness race for the big RFU Championship clash with Cornish Pirate this Friday (kick-off 8pm) – after revealing how the Warriors revel in the atmosphere under floodlights at Sixways Stadium.

Hot prospect Kitchener has impressed with his performances throughout the season, but was forced off during the 28-18 win over Bedford Blues last weekend with injury during the first half.

Head Coach Richard Hill believes the England Saxons star will be declared fit as Worcester look to defend a proud unbeaten home record.

And for Kitchener that means once again sampling the big match atmosphere under the lights on a Friday night where Worcester have shone in recent years.

“It’s always a great atmosphere and the crowd on Friday nights, under the lights, just seem to be even louder,” said the 22-year-old.

“It’s really enjoyable to play in and I remember last season when we played Newcastle Falcons – that was one of our best performances of the season.

“Against Bristol we did that again and performed well so – having all out games on Friday nights might be a good idea!

“There is real competition for places in the squad. Bowls (Will Bowley) and Greg (Rawlinson) are great players themselves so Craig (Gillies) and I have to keep performing to stay in the team,” he added.

“We want to be starting every week but know this is a squad game, I watched as Greg came on and did an excellent job when I got a knock at the weekend against Blues.

“There is real strength in depth throughout the squad and it is important we use that so when we hit the play offs everyone is firing.”
