Olympic dreams for pupils at Sixways

One hundred and ninety pupils from King Charles 1 Cluster Schools attended a Sports Challenge with Sixways stars Miles Benjamin and Tom Arscott and Ashia Hanson MBE, Olympic and Commonwealth Athlete at Sixways on Tuesday, July 12.

Pupils from five local primary schools – Chaddesly, Comberton, Heronswood, Offmore and St Georges – were challenged to create a sports race for the next Olympics.

Using their creativity and imagination, pupils were tasked to design the race and produce a set of rules. Finally, they had to present their ideas on stage in front of all the other pupils. The day was facilitated by Jayne Greene and Isabel Clarke from IJM Media based in Bewdley.

Each school took centre stage to pitch their idea to the Olympic Committee at the end of the day. The winning team – Spectacular Sportsmen, from Comberton Primary – came up with the idea of creating a race based on the current heptathlon but containing lots of different fun elements.

During the day pupils took part in a Question and Answer session with Ashia and Benjamin and Arscott from the Warriors.

Eileen Stead, the Business & Enterprise Project Manager at King Charles I School, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Year 6 pupils from each school to work together to enable a smoother transition into King Charles I School in September and to develop practical skills through the experience of business and enterprise.”

James Hawthorn, Headteacher of Chaddesley Corbet Primary School, added: “This was a fabulous event which Year 6 children across the King Charles 1Pyramid thoroughly enjoyed. There was a real ‘buzz’ of excitement and engagement as they undertook their task, and the chance to listen to Ashia Hansen and ask questions clearly inspired them. A great way to conclude their primary school education!”
