Rejuvenated Mullan ready for opener

Prop Matt Mullan has set his sights on ‘hitting the floor running’ for Warriors as the club prepares for the opening game of the pre-season schedule with RaboDirect Melbourne Rebels on Monday night (kick-off 7.45pm).

Head Coach Richard Hill is set to name his starting line-up to face the Super 15 giants tomorrow (Friday) after a hugely positive week-long warm weather training camp for the Warriors in Switzerland.

Mullan is hoping for the nod after a strong pre-season that contrasts sharply with last year when a freak training ground injury left him facing shoulder surgery and a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The 24-year-old returned with a bang at the end of last season as he shone for England Saxons in the Churchill Cup triumph and now he is looking to carry the upward curve into pre-season and the Aviva Premiership.

Mullan said: “I’m feeling good and the season finished well for me with England Saxons. It was nice to get some game time and start to enjoy playing again. Now it is about hitting the floor running this season for Warriors.

“I had not played in a Churchill Cup competition before so it was great to take part. To have the finals here at Sixways was fantastic and a nice feeling to lift the trophy.

“I was late coming back for pre-season because we were given some time off after the Churchill Cup. It has been tough, though, and the boys are in good nick and ready to start playing.”

“I think the pre-season schedule will be good for all of us,” he added. “The RFU Championship was tough last year, but we need to test ourselves against better teams and the likes that we will come up against in the Aviva Premiership.

“If we can face them early on in pre-season, and get a good gauge of where we are, then that can only be good.”
