Claass captures mean selection poser

Boss Richard Hill has praised the impact of his new recruits on the eve of the new season – and hailed the likes of Errie Claassens and James Percival for giving him a real selection headache.

Hill signed up 13 new faces during the summer months and only Fiji international Ravai Fatiaki is currently away from Sixways as he prepares for the Rugby World Cup.

The Worcester boss will announce his first line-up for the Aviva Premiership opener with Sale Sharks tomorrow at noon.

And he admits the manner in which the newcomers have quickly settled in has made his job all the more harder.

“I think the one player who has really stood out has been Errie Claassens. He was good against us for London Welsh and he has stepped up and fitted in very quickly,” he said.

“James Percival has also stepped in and taken a really good leadership role, he is a hard player who has settled in. Most of them have settled in and hit some form.

“I spoke to Josh Drauniniu and he spoke about how difficult it can be coming into a club and learning how to play with people,” he added. “But all the players have found our style of play is well organised and simple to understand.

“Everyone has a clear role and is a pattern to fit into. Sometimes in a new club the systems can be complicated, this can be the most complicated team sport in the world because there are so many facets to it.

“Coming in it can blow your mind, but they have all come in a slotted into the system quickly.

“Danny Gray, for example, has done well. Your outside half has to control everything and has a million and one things going through his mind. But he has looked very much at home, the first game against Rebels he was outstanding.

“The pre-season has been very good and 90 percent we have been absolutely delighted with. We have worked hard, great strength and conditioning programme and the squad is fitter and stronger than they have ever been.

“We have had four testing games and as coaches we have found out a lot about these players. With Phil Larder we have also had the chance to put a new defensive system in place and put a huge emphasis on that.

“It’s all gone well and, although we lost a few games along the way, it’s about looking at players and finding out about them. I think we now know what our best starting line-up is for the weekend.”
