Defeat for Lutui and Tonga in RWC

Worcester hooker Aleki Lutui started the match as Tonga suffered a 41-10 defeat to New Zealand in the opening match of the IRB 2011 Rugby World Cup Pool A match at Eden Park. More follows…

The hosts were irresistible in the first half, with some sublime handling, big hits and powerful drives breaking the hearts of the Tongans.

Israel Dagg proved why he was named at full-back with two tries, while Richard Kahui underlined his value as he also crossed twice. Jerome Kaino and Ma'a Nonu also scored, while Dan Carter added nine points and Coline Slade slotted over a conversion.

The Tongans deserve credit for their second-half display as they made life uncomfortable – particularly up front – for New Zealand and were rewarded with a Alisona Taumalolo try.
