Garvey Wins Player of the Year Award

Departing winger Marcel Garvey was named the Player of the Year at the End of Season Awards at Worcester Warriors on Friday night.

Wing Garvey, who has scored 46 tries in 125 games for Warriors and will join Top 14 club Castres this summer, edged out fellow nominees Sam Betty and Jake Abbott to claim the top prize as the club celebrated a successful first season back in the Aviva Premiership with 300 guests at the black tie dinner.

Head Coach Richard Hill said: “I have been delighted with Marcel during my time at the club and he fully deserves this award for a fantastic final season at the club.

“He has been one of the standout performers in the squad who is consistently impressive week in and week out for us. He has given his all every time he has pulled on the jersey. He remains one of the best wingers in the country in my eyes and leaves some big shoes to fill.”

The Players’ Player of the Year Award was claimed by uncompromising back row Sam Betty who has enjoyed a stunning debut season at the club and made 24 senior appearances. Fellow nominees for the award were Dale Rasmussen and Garvey.

England Under-20 back row Matt Kvesic claimed the Young Player of the Year for the second successive season ahead of impressive young prop James Currie.

The Warrior of the Year Award, given to the rugby staff member that has through his commitment to the club and fellow group members gained total respect for how he/she has conducted themselves on and off the field, was claimed by James Percival with Betty and Abbott also nominated.

The club’s Community Award, for the player who has excelled with his commitment to the club’s work off the field in the local area, was won by Shaun Perry. Fly half Andy Goode and Errie Claassens were also nominated.
